Direct answer: the Academy of Raya Lucaria is sealed against entry by repelling seals on both its gates. The Academy Glintstone Key is the only way in. The reachable one is on the corpse of a glintstone sorcerer on the island west of the Academy, north of that island’s Site of Grace, guarded by Glintstone Dragon Smarag.
The gate that stops every new arrival
When the Academy refused to take sides in the Shattering, it cast repelling seals on its doors — the east gate toward the Capital and the south gate toward Liurnia. Those seals are still active. Sorcerer Thops states plainly that entry is “impossible without a glintstone key.” This is the first wall in Liurnia and it catches nearly everyone.
Getting to the island
- Start from Liurnia Highway South and work west along the Liurnia Lake Shore.
- The Academy sits in the middle of the lake. The island you want is west of it, not east.
- There is a Site of Grace on the island. The corpse with the key is north of that grace, so cross the island rather than turning back at it.
Smarag
Glintstone Dragon Smarag is the real gate. A dragon on a small island in the middle of a lake is a fair fight only if you have the right answer, and the right answer is that you do not have to fight it alone or at all.
- Bring a strong spirit ash and set it before you commit.
- Use a bow or a spell to draw the dragon’s attention outward, then slip past rather than trading blows.
- Smarag’s breath is a glintstone attack and it is fast. Do not assume dragon breath means slow.
- On horseback, keep circling. The island is small, so a careless angle puts you in the water and in its jaws.
The corpse
North of the grace, a glintstone sorcerer’s corpse. The key on it is the entry key. The key remembers its user, which is a lore line with a practical consequence: once you use it, you cannot pass it to another character.
The spare key, and why it is not an alternative
A second Academy Glintstone Key exists inside the Academy itself, on a corpse hanging from a chandelier in the Church of the Cuckoo, reached by traversing the rooftops north-east of that church’s Site of Grace. It is a genuine key — but it is behind the seal, so you cannot use it to get in. It exists to end Sorcerer Thops’s questline: hand it to him and he is later found dead near the Schoolhouse Classroom holding Thops’s Barrier and Thops’s Bell Bearing, and an Ash of War Scarab appears where he was standing.
Wrong turns worth knowing
- Looking for a door that opens. The seals are not locks. No amount of hitting them helps.
- Reading about the chandelier key and going for that first. It is behind the seal you are trying to open.
- Getting to the wrong island. The reachable key is on the island west of the Academy.
- Fighting Smarag head-on solo. You can do it. Most players should not.
- Taking the key and wandering off without using it. It is not consumed until it opens something, and the seal is the only thing it opens that matters.
Evidence status
Research-reviewed. The repelling seals on both gates, the sorcerer corpse guarded by Smarag on the island west of the Academy, the chandelier corpse in the Church of the Cuckoo reached via the rooftops, and the key’s behaviour are stated from current game data. Not gameplay-verified.
