Deeproot Depths

Start here

Deeproot Depths is the bottom of the world — the source of both the Siofra and the Ainsel rivers, and the furthest downward the Erdtree’s roots go. It is a hybrid of open cavern and enclosed dungeon, and it holds two of the hardest optional bosses in the base game.

It is also reached two completely different ways, one of which almost nobody uses. Both are worth knowing, because which one you take determines which parts of the region you can open up.

What you need before you go

  • For the Siofra route: a pair of Valiant Gargoyles beaten, and the coffin — which is an item you pick up and carry, not a menu prompt.
  • For the Leyndell route: Mohg, the Omen defeated in the Cathedral of the Forsaken, then two hidden walls under the Shunning-Grounds.
  • A light source and a build that can handle ants. The ants in this region are not a joke.

How the region divides

  • The south — where both entrances land you. Great Waterfall Crest, the Erdtree Avatar, the Golden Land Scarab, and the best upgrade material in the region. Great Waterfall Crest is only reachable from the Shunning-Grounds side.
  • The middle — Root-Facing Cliffs, Across the Roots, the Nameless Eternal City, and the tree roots you can ride Torrent across.
  • The north-west — the hollowed tree guarded by Crucible Knight Siluria, and Lichdragon Fortissax beyond it. Both optional, both brutal.

Sites of Grace: Great Waterfall Crest, Root-Facing Cliffs, Across the Roots, Deeproot Depths, Prince of Death’s Throne, The Nameless Eternal City.

Common wrong turns

  • Believing you need Radahn to get here. You do not, via Leyndell. Radahn gates Nokron, which gates the Fingerslayer Blade, which gates Ainsel’s north. Three separate locks, constantly merged into one false claim.
  • Walking past the coffin. It is a carryable item in the Siofra Aqueduct, and it is the whole route.
  • Attempting Siluria unprepared. It is one of the hardest fights in the game and is not gated behind anything that warns you.
  • Missing the map fragment. There is one, on a corpse in a gazebo in the ruins. This region sprawls.

Evidence status

Guides here are research-reviewed: routes, prerequisites and rewards cross-checked against multiple independent references. The widespread claim that Deeproot Depths requires defeating Radahn was checked and rejected — it is inaccurate for the Leyndell route, and the guide says so. None of this is gameplay-verified on camera yet.

  • Deeproot Depths Access: The Coffin Route and the Leyndell Route

Direct answer: the most direct route into the Deeproot Depths is a coffin you physically pick up in the Siofra Aqueduct, in eastern Siofra River, after defeating a pair of Valiant Gargoyles. You carry it, and you use it. There is also a second route through Leyndell that most guides never mention, and it is…

  • Deeproot Depths Loot: Staff of the Avatar and Siluria

Direct answer: the best loot in Deeproot Depths clusters in the southern stretch near the Great Waterfall Crest Site of Grace. Kill the Erdtree Avatar that patrols just west of the grace for the Staff of the Avatar, then take the nearby Teardrop Scarab for the Ash of War: Golden Land. Further in sit two…
