Start here if you are new to Caelid
Caelid is the region players go to when they are stuck, and it earns that reputation. Scarlet rot is not a debuff to shrug off here — it is the region’s defining mechanic and the reason most Caelid guides on this site lead with survivability rather than with a loot list. Rot is cumulative: the meter builds while you are in the region and it does not tick down on its own. You clear it by resting at a Site of Grace. A player who poisons themselves in the swamp and walks out is still poisoned when they get to the next area.
Set up at the Rotview Balcony grace first. It is the region’s first site and the one you will return to most. From there the region divides into the Swamp of Aeonia in the centre, Dragonbarrow in the north, the red waste to the south and west, and the Wailing Dunes in the southeast where Radahn’s festival is held.
What you need before you go
- Rot-clearing remedies and a way to heal. Taking a hit you would normally dodge is often the right trade in Caelid.
- Rest at a grace to clear buildup. Standing still in the swamp does not drain the meter — only resting does.
- Immersion pools outside the Swamp of Aeonia also build rot, including ones on the roads you think are safe.
- Rot enemies apply it on hit, so fighting near them builds it faster than wading does.
How the region divides
Western Caelid is the part a player reaches straight out of Limgrave: Fort Gael, the Shack of the Rotting, Caelid Waypoint Ruins, and the War-Dead Catacombs. This is where a stuck player is most likely already standing.
The Swamp of Aeonia is the centre and the worst of it. Four Sites of Grace sit in or beside it, and the arrangement is deliberate — every deeper grace is a push through more rot. Commander O’Neil holds the middle and drops the Unalloyed Gold Needle, a key item that gates two questlines.
Dragonbarrow is the north, and it holds the Divine Tower of Caelid. That tower is the exception to a rule almost every player has learned wrongly: it is the only Divine Tower in the game you enter by climbing the outside on foot from Dragonbarrow West, not by spirit spring from the Altus Plateau.
Abandoned Cave sits in the cliffs north of the swamp, above the ravine to the Deep Siofra Well. Rot geysers, a working Iron Virgin, and two Cleanrot Knights guard the Gold Scarab.
Common wrong turns
- Believing rot wears off on its own. It does not. This is the error that turns a rough run into a death spiral across three areas.
- Saying “Waypoint Ruins” without naming the region. There are two locations by that name in the game. The wiki’s default Waypoint Ruins article is the Limgrave one, east of Agheel Lake. The Caelid one is a separate location west of the Swamp of Aeonia, and it is where the Meteoric Ore Blade is.
- Looking for a ground-level door on the Divine Tower of Caelid. There is none. The climb from Dragonbarrow West is the only way in.
- Assuming you need Altus Plateau for that tower. You do not. Most Divine Towers are reached from Altus; this one is not.
- Treating the whole of Caelid as equally bad. The Swamp of Aeonia is the worst of it. The red waste outside is survivable by comparison.
- Starting the Minor Erdtree Catacombs as a first stop. The lower level is flooded with scarlet rot, which makes it a poor destination for a player who has not learned the rules yet.

Everything on this hub is research-reviewed, checked against multiple independent sources. Nothing here is marked gameplay-verified, because no playthrough capture exists yet. Where a claim could not be confirmed by a second source, it was left out rather than softened. Guides are added here as they are written, and the list below is the live, complete set for this region.
